When Was Jesus Crucified?

April 14th, 2010
Before I get too deep into this subject, I want to make it very clear that this is NOT a salvation issue. I’ve seen people go toe to toe over issues like this, but whether you believe that Jesus was crucified on Friday, Wednesday or any other day is not something that should drive a wedge between believers. It is the reason for His crucifixion and resurrection that is important, not when it happened.

That being said lets look at the events of the final week before the resurrection.

Every Christian knows that there were three important events that week. The first was what we “Triumphal Entry”. This is when Jesus arraigned for His entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. Contrary to how tradition and modern thought paints this, riding on the back of a donkey was reserved for royalty. It was not a humble expression. Jesus was, for the first time in His life, declaring Himself as the Messiah and allowing Himself to be worshipped as such.

The second event was the crucifixion. Tradition tells us that this occurred on Friday, just prior to the Sabbath.

The third, and most important, was the resurrection. There is no doubt that this happened on Sunday following the Saturday Sabbath.

John 20
1 Now the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

What the Christian church has, unfortunately, done was to separate the events of the crucifixion from the feasts the Lord set up to predict the event. The early Church tried to distance themselves from Hebrew traditions and worked up a system that would insure that the celebration of the crucifixion would never coincide with Passover. We need to remember that the Lord has set up many patterns in the scriptures and the fact that the crucifixion happened on Passover was the most important.

There are three spring feasts during the Passover season. They are Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Feast of Firstfuits.

Leviticus 23

5 On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the LORD’s Passover.

The Hebrews have two calendars, one civil and one religious. The month of Nisan is the seventh month on the civil and the first month on the religious calendar. Passover was designated to be held on the 14th of Nisan. This feast was extremely important and everyone was commanded to leave their homes and travel to Jerusalem to observe it.

Unleavened Bread followed Passover.

Leviticus 23
6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; seven days you must eat unleavened bread.

The final feast was Firstfruits.

Leviticus 23
9 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 10 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land which I give to you, and reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest. 11 He shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted on your behalf; on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.

Firstfruits was always held on Sunday, the day after the Sabbath. However, it’s important to know that Saturday is not considered the only Sabbath day. Feasts that have only one day are also Sabbaths. Unleavened Bread, which lasts seven days, has two, the first and last days of the feast. The Sabbath referred to in Leviticus 23:11 is the Saturday Sabbath.

We know that Jesus rose on Sunday morning from John 20:1 and that that day was the Feast of Firstfuits. Jesus was the firstfuit of the new covenant. While the calendar is a little foggy about what the actual date was, there is a clue in Genesis.

Genesis 8
4 Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat.

Anytime the Lord puts an “insignificant” fact in the scriptures, we should take notice. As I said, the Hebrews have two calendars, civil and religious. The religious calendar was instituted by Moses when the law was given. The calendar used in Genesis is the civil calendar. The seventh month on the civil calendar is the first month on the religious, Nisan. So the ark came to rest on the 17th of Nisan. The resting of the ark is symbolic of a new beginning, the firstfuits of a new world. By “coincidence” this is exactly three days after the day that Passover would have been. The feasts had not, yet, been instituted but, as the Rabbis say “Coincidence is not a kosher word”.

If, and I repeat…if, the Feast of Firstfuits landed on the 17th of Nisan the year that Jesus was resurrected, He would has risen exactly three days after Passover. Now, let’s look at the calendar.

If Sunday was the 17th of Nisan, then Passover would have begun at sundown on Wednesday. The following day, Thursday would have been the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Tradition says that Jesus was crucified on Friday and that in order to keep from having the three bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath, the legs were to be broken to speed up their deaths.

John 19
31 Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

There are two clues here that tell us what day it actually was. First, it was the Preparation Day. The day before Passover was a day of preparation. The women would gather everything together for the Passover meal so that it would be ready by sundown. Part of the preparation was the killing of the unblemished lamb that was to be eaten before midnight that night. The lamb was killed between 3:00pm and 5:00pm, just before sundown.

This lamb was chosen three days prior and brought into the home. The family would treat this lamb as a pet and when it was killed it was truly a sacrifice by the entire family. If Passover was on Wednesday, then the lamb was chosen the previous Sunday. This was the same day that Jesus revealed Himself to be the Messiah and, in the words of John the Baptist, “The lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world”.

The second clue in John 19 is the statement that this Sabbath was a “high day”. This was not a Saturday Sabbath, but a high feast day. It could only be Passover. This would mean that Jesus died just before sundown on the Preparation Day at the same time that every Hebrew family was killing their own sacrificial lamb. This is not to be confused with the Day of Atonement when the High Priest would offer a sacrifice in the Holy of Holies for the sins of the nation. This was a sacrifice made by every Hebrew family in their own home. A much more personal sacrifice.

Another important point comes in Jesus’ own words.

Matthew 12:40
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

If Jesus was crucified on Friday, He could not have risen on Sunday. Jesus was very explicit when He said “three days and three nights”. Do the math. There just aren’t three days and three nights between Friday evening and Sunday morning.

Temple Mount Update – Riots At The Wall

March 17th, 2010

On Friday, February 26 a group of Arab youths, after finishing Friday prayers on the temple mount began hurling rocks at worshipers praying at the Western Wall. Israeli police restored order with stun grenades, but not before the rioting spread to the Islamic Quarter in Jerusalem.

The Temple Mount was closed to visitors for several days, but has been reopened. These events reminded me of the efforts, already in progress, to rebuild the Temple. I thought I'd post a couple of videos about the Temple Institute's efforts to fulfill, unintentionally, this prophesy of the last days.

One World Government, Coming To Your Livingroom In December

October 30th, 2009
Although this site is about studying and proving the Bible, I thought I should mention a couple of this going on in the world. It relates, because the social and political climate of the world predicted in the Bible for the last days is unfolding around us.

This week President Obama signed a bill to increase military funding. Attached to that bill was the “hate bill” that will effectively censor the Christian religion and forbid parts of God’s Word from being spoken in public. The Church is being driven underground. That may sound a bit radical, but if you expected the Church to be outlawed overnight, you are mistaken. The banning of belief in Jesus as our savior will be done in small increments. The “hate bill” is just one step. Expect more.

As scary as the passing of the “hate bill” is, it pales in comparison to this next item.

2 Thessalonians 2 (New King James Version)

9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie,

There will be a meeting in December of all the world leaders in Copenhagen to sign the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. I used to think that “the lie” referred to in 2 Thessalonians was evolution, but I’m beginning to think it might be “climate change” (no longer referred to as “global warming”, probably because of the cooling trend the Earth is in). Watch this excerpt from a speech given by Lord Christopher Monckton in St. Paul, MN.

The text below was taken from the YouTube site that was hosting the video. Please take the time to read it. At the bottom of the excerpt is a link to an article that appeared in the Wall Street Journal by Janet Albrechtsen. She cuts through the legalese of the treaty and gives a good explanation of what’s in it. I doubt anyone reading this post will like it very much (the treaty, not Miss Albrechtsen’s article).

On October 14, Lord Christopher Monckton gave a presentation in St. Paul, MN on the subject of global warming. In this 4-minute excerpt from his speech, he issues a dire warning to all Americans regarding the United Nations Climate Change Treaty that is scheduled to be signed in Copenhagen in December 2009.

A draft of the treaty can be read here:

http://www.globalclimatescam.com/docu…

Chuck Norris has an article in WorldNetDaily with a good analysis of the treaty:

http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE….

There has been considerable debate raised about Monckton's conclusion that the Copenhagen Treaty would cede US sovereignty. His comments appear to be based upon his interpretation of the The Supremacy Clause in the US Constitution (Article VI, paragraph 2). This clause establishes the Constitution, Federal Statutes, and U.S. TREATIES as the supreme law of the land. Concerns have been raised in the past that a particularly ambitious treaty may supersede the US Constitution. In the 1950s, a constitutional amendment, known as the Bricker Amendment, was proposed in response to such fears, but it failed to pass. You can read more about the Bricker Amendment in a 1953 Time Magazine article:

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/art…,9171,806676-1,00.html

Lord Monckton served as a policy adviser to Margaret Thatcher. He has repeatedly challenged Al Gore to a debate to which Gore has refused. Monckton sued to stop Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth" from being shown in British schools due to its inaccuracies. The judge found in-favor of Monckton, ordering 9 serious errors in the film to be corrected. Lord Monckton travels internationally in an attempt to educate the public about the myth of global warming.

Turkey And The Magog Invasion

July 2nd, 2009

I’m still working on last week’s post (been a busy week), but I just saw a report I thought needed a quick note.

Since the formation of the European Union, Turkey has been trying to become a member. In 1999, eight years after Turkey applied for full membership, the EU recognized Turkey as a “candidate”. Turkey has been working hard to be accepted into the EU. They have initiated many sweeping reforms, including a rework of their penal system, but several roadblocks still are in place.

Two are especially noteable.

1. The Cyprus Problem
Due to a military action in 1974, the island of Cyprus has been divided. The northern half is controlled by Turkey and the southern portion is controlled by Greece. Friction between the two countries date back to the Trojan War. The northern half is now the independant Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized by Turkey alone. The southern half was admitted into the EU in 2004 as the country of Cyprus.

2. The Muslim population

If Turkey joins the EU, it will be the second largest population block, behind Germany, in the EU. This would change the EU Muslim population in the EU from the current 3-5% to 20-25%. Already, Islam is the largest religious minority in the EU. This is especially alarming considering the decay of the Christian churches in Europe. There are still pockets of light, but the Christian church has been silenced in most of the EU.

So why am I getting all political on a Bible based blog?

Russia has just announced today that negotiations are moving ahead to build a major oil pipeline through Turkey to the Caspian Sea.The Russian Pipeline, called the South Stream Pipeline, is in a race with the proposed Nabucco Pipleine to be built by the European gas industry. dw_gas_map

The proposal to place the South Stream through Turkey is a result of a massive deal by Russia to purchase gas from Azerbaijan (an extremely energy rich country) announced last week. Originally, the South Stream was to go from the Russian shore through the Black Sea. However it appears that the route may go directly through Turkey. If this deal is struck, it may prevent Europe from building the Nabucco Pipeline which was designed to bypass Russia and open new resources for the EU. Right now, 80% of Europe’s gas comes from Russia routed through the Ukraine. This resulted in large parts of the EU being left, literally, in the dark when Russia cut off supplies to the Ukraine for several weeks.

Part of the offer to Turkey involves Russia providing Turkey with at least one nuclear power plant. If Turkey signs this deal, it will align the country with Russian and Iran (already a Russian ally). This is significant since the only missing member of the Magog invasion force was Turkey.

Ezekiel 38

3 and say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. 4 I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. 5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you.

If the names in the verses above are strange, don’t worry. The names used are of the original inhabitants of the regions. The names may have changed over the centuries, but the lands mentioned are easily identifiable. To get a good look at the Magog invasion, read all of Ezekiel 38 & 39. There are elements of this battle that could not have possibly made sense before the introduction of nuclear weapons.

Ezekiel 39

11 “It will come to pass in that day that I will give Gog a burial place there in Israel, the valley of those who pass by east of the sea; and it will obstruct travelers, because there they will bury Gog and all his multitude. Therefore they will call it the Valley of Hamon Gog. 12 For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, in order to cleanse the land. 13 Indeed all the people of the land will be burying, and they will gain renown for it on the day that I am glorified,” says the Lord GOD. 14 “They will set apart men regularly employed, with the help of a search party, to pass through the land and bury those bodies remaining on the ground, in order to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will make a search. 15 The search party will pass through the land; and when anyone sees a man’s bone, he shall set up a marker by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon Gog. 16 The name of the city will also be Hamonah. Thus they shall cleanse the land.”’

This section occurs after the battle is over. Notice that the burial east of the sea. This can be read as downwind. Now look closely at verses 14-15. Special teams of men are employed to bury the dead. Search parties are to look for bones, not bodies. This is during the first seven month following the battle. Flesh would have decomposed, but not disappeared entirely. The searchers are not to touch the bones. They are to just set a marker. I imagine that the buriers are specially equipped and, most likely, are dressed in hazmat suits.

Conclusion

Scripture makes it very clear that Turkey is a participant in the Magog invasion, but without a strong tie to Russia it didn’t make sense that they would join in a battle against Israel. Especially, when Turkey was working so hard to join the EU.

If the South Stream Pipeline is built through Turkey it would supply Turkey with all the energy and security the country would need. Turkey could give up on their bid to join the EU and reinstate a lot of the Islamic practices they did away with to appease the EU.

All the elements for the Magog invasion will be in place.

Rapture Wrap-up

June 2nd, 2009

Well, Pentecost has come and gone and we’re still here.

Am I disappointed? Of course, but I feel the same way every morning when I find that we’re still here. Remember, I didn’t say that the rapture WOULD happen on this year’s Pentecost just that it was very likely. That likelihood keeps getting stronger as each day passes. I still feel that the rapture will probably occur on Pentecost because of the patterns the Lord has already set up throughout history. Pentecost, The Feast of Weeks, fits into the pattern very nicely. That’s not to say that it might not happen on any other day.

That possibility should keep us on our toes. I expect that we will have to wait, at least, another year before the next opportunity comes around, but the chance that it could happen at any moment keeps the fire burning.

In other news, for those of you waiting for last Sunday’s lesson posted. It’s almost formatted and ready. I expect to get it posted within an hour or so after this message.
